One Poem

Amber McBride

Black Witch Moth (Ascalapha odorata)

They think it’s the light—white,
          iridescent, irresistible, irresponsible.

It’s more gun raised hopeless swagger—
a pull ahead to the inevitable. It is better to walk off
than be pushed off the plank.

More moth saying: I’ll come if you promise to burn me quick.
I am a master of rebirth.
More light saying: We got him, we got him.
