Sarah Levine is pursuing her MFA in Poetry at Sarah Lawrence College. Recent work has been published in elimae, Westchester Review, and Everyday Genius. Levine also teaches Creative Writing to women at Valhalla Correctional
Facility.
Mother, school is counting mouths I have never opened: bedroom, greenhouse, cinema. Even our mouths have doors for birds to fly in and out. Mother, you had a hummingbird caught inside your smallest cinema, a bird with the strongest heart. Patter pitter. Your mouth fed songs into my ears before bed and I know I was loved in the house I grew out of.
